A GoDaddy exile!

Well, GoDaddy has ended their support for ColdFusion as of November 29th!
And I was on my quest to find a Coldfusion provider, I weighed the cost, reviews and features from 18 CF providers, and here I am.

I can tell you the GoDaddy unlimited everything was nice, but in hindsight, was it?

Yes the hosting was cheap, but then after the first year the renewals:
Deluxe Linux $95.88 yr
CF $24 yr
20 SMTP Email Relays $25.20 yr
IMAP email 10 boxes $23.05yr
10 Group calendars $15 yr

Approx $186yr.

I had 15 websites on my server and in total they do not exceed the disk space and bandwidth of the Nexus Fusion Silver plan. $199 year ( use discount code spring and get 25% off or $150)

I'm still in the process of setting up my servers, and support is great. It's only on-line or chat, but still far faster than godaddy not only in response time, but also because you get the correct answer the first time.

I like that they are moving to CF9, godaddy was stuck on CF7! I'm not sure what Nexus has limited as far as CFTAGS, but nothing could be as draconian as godaddy.

Good luck in your Quest!

Thanks for the feedback post. Strange that Godaddy is still on CF7!

As for tags, we only restrict CFREGISTRY and CFEXECUTE but they can still be used with certain conditions.

I was amazed that WebCentral - one of the largest "business" providers here in Australia - was still putting new accounts onto PHP 4 in 2008, well after PHP support expired. You had to almost argue to get PHP 5. I guess the large businesses don't want to update.

And yes, WebCentral charge a fortune and you end up for ages on the phone for support (unless you call sales and say "I've just bought this new hosting plan and...").

Some businesses are scared to update. Some of the servers at our office still run classic stuff on them...

CF is a scary upgrade on Windows though. When we upgraded from CF 7 to CF 8 we had plenty of issues.

I understand the reluctance to upgrade. My day job I sell large san disk arrays to fortune 500 companies. They are only willing to upgrade the firmware on them once a year, regardless on how many updates we have. Even when we have what we consider a critical update, they evaluate if the problem the update is trying to fix will hit them. Change in a business environment, with systems that need a 5 nines uptime is not welcome.

But GoDaddy CF was locked down severely, and I can only assume it was because the majority of admins there were clueless when it came to CF, and it was more to stop THEM from making a change that could affect the systems adversely.

At NEXUS, it feels like a partnership. I have a problem, some questions are asked, and the change is approved and implemented. A whole different world than what I at accustomed to at GoDaddy.
I’m not saying it’s perfect here ;-) There were some bumps in the road, but all were resolved quickly!

Yah, at Godaddy everything runs like a faceless corporation. A HN we have 4 techs in each department so you get to know everyone quickly and they get to know your account too. Glad everything is working out well so far.
