WordPress 3.1.1
WordPress was updated to 3.1.1 on April 5th. For more information read the news over on their site:
WordPress 3.1.1
Note: If you are unable to perform the auto-update, first remove the upgrade folder under wp-content (FTP). If it still a no-go, disable all plugins and run the auto-update. Once done, re-enable the plugins (recently activated plugins).

I love the auto-upgrade feature in WordPress. I always upgrade as soon as a version is released and it only takes a few seconds. All programs should have this feature.

Although you do need to be careful with some of the plugins - so are so specifically written they may not be compatable. We had that issue with 3.1 and had to run a quick down-grade (which isn't so easy!)

Hi, I see an "uploads" folder but no "upgrades" folder. Do I remove the "uploads" folder? I really appreciate finding this thread, I'm going bald from trying to upgrade wp. Thanks!

The uploads (in wp-content) should NOT be deleted. This basically stores a lot of your content.
If you don't have an upgrades folder, you probably haven't tried to upgrade.
If you can, practice locally first. WP makes it easy to upgrade, but when it goes wrong, it's sepctacularily difficult to recover from unless you havea good backup.

I've been trying to upgrade and the auto-upgrade wackadoo doesn't work for me, keeps prompting me to put in hostname, username, password and ftp type. I read on wp that no matter what you put in, it won't work.

Also, haven't found a backup app compatible with my wp version, so I just copied the whole wp folder to my desktop. Would that work as a proper backup?

Yay You! Well done.
a) Yes, copying the entire folder to desktop is 100% better than nothing.
b) A bit late now, but you should ALSO have copied / backup up your database. Follow Mike's tutorial on this site for backing up databases through Plesk.
And final note: always good to keep a backup anyway. Just in case. So rename the abackup as "May2011" and create once called "June2011" in 4 weeks, and, well, you can guess where it goes from there
