Shared IP address

I have a domain that I set up in Plesk for a client last evening.

At first they didn't specify that they wanted a unique IP address for the domain so I did it under the shared IP for my account.

This morning they decided that they wanted a unique IP. So I changed the setup info to one of my unique IP addresss.

QUESTION: How long does it take for this unique IP to be visible in the browser by typing in the IP after the change was made.

I don't get a lot of requests for unique IP's so I hope I have done this correctly.

This is what I get when I type the IP 216.118.66.224

This is the Server Administrator™ default page.
If you see this page it means:

1) hosting for this domain is not configured
or
2) there's no such domain registered in Plesk.
Thanks y'all

Okay, few things to note here.

1) When you change the IP address of a domain, that page will appear. This is because dns servers have cached the dns record for this domain including its A record on the old IP. If you switch the IP, you have to wait to dns servers query the the server again. This is governed by the TTL setting which is set to 86400 by default (24 hours). So if you switch the IP of a domain on the server, all you are doing is setting it locally - you have to wait until dns servers query the server again and your ISP downloads that cache (this is the basis of propagation).

What we can do to avoid downtime when a domain's IP is switched is to lower the TTL setting for that domain to 60 seconds and then let this new setting propagate outwards. This is telling dns servers to query the server every 60 seconds so when you switch the IP, a few seconds later the new IP should be cached and the domain will work fine on the new IP.

2) To get the domain to show up by simply typing the IP in the browser, you have to go into "IP Pool" and click on the number in the "Hosting" column. Find the domain that is hosted on that IP, select it and hit "Set as Default".

You can't. Raise a trouble ticket if you need it doing.
