Registering nameservers

Lately we have been receiving many support enquiries from new resellers about registering nameservers so I thought it might be helpful to stick a thread about it at the top of this forum.

It's worth noting that registering nameservers and entering nameservers into the nameserver fields of your domain's control panel are 2 separate things. Before you can actually point your domains to your new personal nameservers, you have to register them. From our Activation email:
Quote:
###########################
2. Registering Nameservers
###########################

Your first priority in moving your site over to HostNexus will be registering your new nameservers and transferring your domain’s DNS. This sounds extremely complex but in reality this is quite a simple task. Your account has been set up with these IPs:

ns.domain.com
123.123.123.123
ns2.domain.com
123.123.123.123

IMPORTANT: You must now physically register these nameservers at your registrar. Log in to your domain’s control panel and look for a link that says, “Create Nameserver” or “Register DNS” and input the nameserver names and IPs. Your nameservers won’t exist until you have done this. With that done, you can then modify your domain’s DNS record to point to the new nameservers.
Note: the above nameservers and IP addresses are just examples. Use the IPs and nameservers that came with your welcome email.

Most registrars have this option to register nameservers. For example, here is the process for registering nameservers at GoDaddy:

Select the nameservers in the dropdown and hit Go.
This will take you to the "Manage Nameserver" bit. Look at the top and you will see your domain next to where it says Manage Nameservers - click that.
Look at the bottom "Domain Host Information". If you ever need to edit the IP of a nameserver, click the IP. But in this case, we just want to add more nameservers so click "(click here to add)".
In the first "Host" field, enter ns. And enter the IP below. Click Register Nameserver and repeat for ns.
If anyone knows the process for registering nameservers at any other registrars, please feel free to post.

I have just added some flash tutorials which show how to create nameservers at various popular registrars:

http://www.ev1servers.net

- Go to 'Name Servers'
- At the very bottom, it says, 'If you want to create or modify a nameserver which is based on (yourdomain).com click here.'
- Click there
- Enter the nameserver (ns1, ns2, etc)
- Enter the IP
- You're done!

Yep, and that also applies to all OpenSRS systems.

Welcome, Vahst!

http://www.namescout.com

- click on 'Domain Admin'
- select the domain that you want to setup
- click the 'Edit' button next to 'Domain - Name Server Information'
- enter your primary and secondary nameservers and their IP addresses
- click on 'Save'

This information will now be set for your domain but if you are using a custom nameserver there is still one more step (thanks to Laurence for discovering this ). You will need to contact namescout (email or phone) to make the nameserver IP address change 'active'. Yes, it sounds stupid but the domain wont propagate properly until this is done. Also, any other domains pointing to your custom nameservers wont work until the IP change is active.

Hope this helps someone!

Cheers,
Evan

Registering at Active-Domain.com
https://domainpanel.com/

- login to domain manager
- click on domain name link
- click on nameservers link
- using drop-down arrow on use box , select user own nameservers
- In Nameserver Address boxes, type in your nameserver using (ns.yourdomain.ext) format. You are given space for up to 4 names. Do not use ip addresses or it will not work.
- Click modify changes button
- On the change confirmation screen, click cancel to go back to the main screen, there you will see the "not using our nameservers" statement reflecting the changes.

Registerfly.com

You gotta dig a little at registerfly:

1) Home > My Account > Manage Domains > Manage NameServers > Create a NameServer

2) Enter nameserver and IP and submit. Don't forget to add both primary and secondary.
