FrontPage Madness!

Hello group,

BTW, This is my first post. It might be long to read but might interest some of you.

The other day, one of my clients was having problems publishing her site with FronPage. The forms and search scripts weren't working so I asked her; "Which version of FP do you have?" She answered "FP 2000"

Here's what I did to investigate the problem. I went to her index.html and viewed the source code. I found this tag; <meta name="GENERATOR" content="Microsoft FrontPage 5.0">.

I went on to microsoft website to find what version 5.0 equals too. Was it FP 2002 or 2000? I couldn't find anything about it on the net. So luckyly, my roommate has office XP with FP. I went over to his computer and created a small test site and checked the index.html source code to see what the GENERATOR tag contained. Guess what guys, it was the same as her's; <meta name="GENERATOR" content="Microsoft FrontPage 5.0">. That was my proof she wasn't publishing with FP2000.

That means she was using FP 2002 or OfficeXP. BUT, she was going on and on and on about being a system administrator herself and assured me she was using FP2000. She even send me a screen snapshot of FP's "About" popup. Hmmm. i said.

She got me. I don't know what she's trying to pull here but, I wasn't sure what to tell her. I just couldn't tell her she was lying to me! So, I came to HostNexus to ask Laurence to help me out with the situation. What we decided to do is to remove and reinstall her domain from scratch. Maybe there' was a currupted file somewhere. It took about two days to get her going again. Not to mention also that she was modifying her DNS every otherday trying to fix the problem herself. My goodness! She denied it until I sent her a copy of an earlier whois I made on her domain that clearly showed a modification was done just the day before, while we were trying to fix the problem. I told her not to change anything for a while until we fix the problem.

Now her site works like a charm. No problems. The search scripts, the forms...everything works. Guess what guys. I went back to check her index.html source code after the problem was solved... Here is what it contains now: <meta name="GENERATOR" content="Microsoft FrontPage 4.0">

All that time she was pulling my leg. Can I really trust her knowledge and moral senses?

Thank for reading guys!

I know the "Golden Rule". I kept my cool all the way, just ignoring the fact that she was trying to pull a good one on me.

She is very happy now and that was my "Golden Goal"!

Hi Patrick!

Sounds like the same weird stuff going on with my pc! I've got a caching problem that makes me think the dns is screwed up (I didn't keep changing it though, that would only make things worse ) I Just can't seem to fix it. My husband tore apart all my browser settings, deleted all my files and still it's like a box of chocolates... you never know what your gonna get But the pages look right on our other pc's.

I decided a while back that I was only going to resell to clients that let me do everything... cuts out those wierd little problems

Hello Debbie, nice to meet you...

Have you tried switching modems with your other pc? Maybe it's the modem or even it's driver. Never know what electronics has in store for us

it's a network of 5 pc's using router and hub to a cable internet connection. I thought about that last night... but since the others are fine I didn't try it, maybe it needs to be powercycled, though it was done about 10 days ago.

It's actually happening with every domain except the subdomain that has never existed before, anywhere on the internet. At first I thought it was just in limbo with the dns updates so I just kind of ignored it over the weekend, but last night was when I knew something was up. It's weird when you do a tracert that points to the right IP but you can't view the page that you know is uploaded and different from what you are seeing.... and you can't seem to fix it

Isn't that sometin'!

Have you tried switching nic cables around from one pc to another. That way you might be able to eliminate the pc factor. Maybe there is a fault in the hub or router.

I'm going to investigate more tomorrow. With so many cables there could be something I guess. I think he didn't believe me when I told him about it earlier so I showed him around 10pm when it started again. I worked on a few online admin things on that site earlier in the evening and everything was fine till I closed the browser or used it to go somewhere else. When I changed the links and went to upload the changes the ftp even went to the old server..... He fixed that by deleting the ftp account in the program and adding it back in.

It's just a mystery
