Question Name-based or IP-based

First of all, I'd like to apologize for my english. It's my weak point.

I signed up a week ago and I must say Hostnexus impressed me with its live chat especially. It's my 4th hosting company since 1999. I did not have occasion to get the support like this before.

However the incomplete information about host types have led me to a misunderstanding. I have added new domain with IP-based host and it was created with static IP address, but then I changed it to name-based after I had learned from this forum that static IP address needs extra fees.

I have worked with static IP address only. What's the difference between Name-based and IP-based host types? What are merits and demerits of Name-based host?

Onyx,

As someone who went from one to another, the quick answer is that IP-based hosting gives you a couple more options. Firstly, for secure hosting (eg where you are running an online store), IP-based hosting is preferred for your SSL certificate. Also, it gives you the option of setting up an Anonymous FTP server, for your users to send/receive files.

If these two things aren't important to you, there really won't be much of a difference between Name-based and IP-based hosting so far as your site's operation is concerned. There are probably a few more minor differences that the HostNexus guys will point out when they come into the forum, but for most small-to-medium sites a unique IP isn't that important.

Thank you, Scott, I see!

I am going to add 9-10 domains to my Name-based reseller account. So, my domains will have one IP address. Is it identical to hostnexus.com?

Hi,

First of all don't play with your IP settings in Plesk. You have 2 IPs assigned to you for your nameservers and your main account is IP based on your second nameserver. Do not try and make any more domains IP based as this will most likely kill your local DNS configuration.

There are really strict guidelines on the allocation of IPs these days and name-based hosting is standard. Scott was totally correct on all his points. You really only need an IP if you need to install your own security certificate or enable anonymous FTP.

Whenever you create a domain it will default to namebased. All you need to do is edit the DNS zone. Remove the HostNexus NS record and add your own.

Yes, using name-based, your IPs will be the same as Hostnexus.com

Thank you, Mike. I beleive I am in good company!

I wouldn't like to be so cheeky (or so dull) , but I have one more question concerning Name-based hosting.

I have read on this forum about invisibility of hostnexus.com for my clients, in other words my domain will look like their hosting company.

But if my clients have an IP address identical to hostnexus.com and they will ping 64.49.222.142 using a program like NeoTrace (very popular in my country) they will see following:

IP address: 64.49.222.142
Name: hostnexus.com
Network: Rackspace.com (NETBLK-RSPC-NET-3)

Hi,

Yes, that would uncover HostNexus. Most people wouldn't go to such extremes anyway.......

Onyx,

This is one of the reasons I went IP-based. Even with that, the curious will still find Rackspace, and a service scan of SMTP will yield:

SMTP - 25 220 hostnexus.com ESMTP
