January Promotion
Hello. I came across this site while surfing freewebspace.net and I must say, that January promotion is tempting me. However, before I rush and sign up to it, I wanted to ask a few questions, just to make sure of things.
Do you have CGI for this account? I have a UBB messageboard for now, which is the only thing I need CGI for in the forseeable future.
What about PHP? I don't know any right now, but I expect to come across it in my classes and would like a place to practice, and eventually use it.
How long have you provided hosting services?
Will you ask every month before charging my account?
Is this hosting ad-free?
You'll help me set up my domain so that it points to this, right? I'm new at such things, don't quite know how it works.
Thanks in advance for your answers.

Hi,
Let me go through your questions one-by-one:
Do you have CGI for this account? I have a UBB messageboard for now, which is the only thing I need CGI for in the forseeable future.
Everyone gets a private CGI-bin but we don't allow UBB. It's quite resource intensive and we'd prefer if you used a board like one, vbulletin, which is better and cheaper.
What about PHP? I don't know any right now, but I expect to come across it in my classes and would like a place to practice, and eventually use it.
Full PHP support. This board is PHP and we use a number of PHP scripts throughout the site.
How long have you provided hosting services?
We're quite new, been around since the end of last year. Growing rapidly, though!
Will you ask every month before charging my account?
As with any host, your account would be automatically debited every month. You can cancel at any time, it would be immediate.
Is this hosting ad-free?
Yes!
You'll help me set up my domain so that it points to this, right? I'm new at such things, don't quite know how it works.
It's quite simple and we can walk you through as you do it via live chat or we can do it for you.
If you need any more info you can me or Chris on Chat at any time, 24/7.

What?!! No UBB? I'm not talking thousands of members here, I've got maybe 20 people signed up, after being up for 3 months on t35, and it took that long to make the buttons and layout just right. I've got an older version, v5.47, so maybe that doesn't use as many resources as the new 6.2 does.
But geez, if I have to, I'll try to find something else I like as much as UBB.
Are there any other boards you don't allow?

Hi,
As a rule of thumb, we don't allow any flat-file cgi scripted boards. This board, vBulletin is fast becoming the most popular board on the net. Cost is minimal compared to UBB and doesn't load the server.
We want to offer lightning fast connections speeds to our customers, that would be compromised by running applications like UBB. ALOT of host have banned them now for that reason. Please get me on chat so I can discuss this with you.

message boards
As I recall V is $80 a year, but it is a good one.
I think we need a board for the old farts but at this point I don't want to pay for one. Maybe Nex can recommend a good free one, I know of a few.

Hey,
There is an excellent free one called phpBB2. I set up a demonstration one here. That's what it looks like when you you unpack it.
But check out what can be done with it. Tygirwulf spent some time on it and came up with this .
Totally outstanding!

ikonboard is also another good forums, but just make sure when installing you choose MySQL or a database as I believe it can also use a flat file database, which like said above wastes lots of system resources. I also plan to look at some of the other forums available when I get my Websites up, but most the groups I am with use ikonboard. www.ikonboard.com is the site I think.

Even while used with mySQL it still isn't very good as its only 80% database (other bits flat file) and the backend is horrible
