CGI Scripts

Hi,

I like what I'm hearing on these boards overall, and I was happy with the answers to my emailed questions. The only thing that makes me a little leary is the problems with getting cgi to work correctly.

I don't want to have to contact tech support each time I install a simple script. I've read here of scripts that worked at the person's previous host that won't work here. The problems were usually fixed, but the question remains as to why something that worked before needed to be "fixed" at all.

Correcting paths is one thing, but having to run every script through a dostounix program to remove carriage returns means installing a script is always dependent on tech support.

I haven't seen a definite answer in any of the threads I've read, so if you could please tell me if the problems I've read are unusual or not, and if there are general problems, what's causing them, and are there some specific items that should be checked to make the script is compatible with your servers.

I'm no cgi/perl wiz, actually quite the opposite, but as long as I know the correct paths and which permissions work on your setup, I can always get a script to work. I just don't want to have to wait for tech support's help with each installation. I also imagine tech support wouldn't want to have to deal with me that often either.

Thanks,

Mark

Hi Mark!

Yeah, I can see where someone just comming in here might develop the impression you have. It is unfortunate because it gives the new HostNexus user a false impression. Let me give you the skinny.

1. In the beginning......when Hostnexus wasn't even a month old, we had a server configuration issue. Like all issues that end up biting you - we didn't realize it and kept defending ourselves. Our Data Center didn't realize it and kept telling us we didn't know what we were doing. All of this did create some sore feelings with a couple of people here, and unfortunately they to this day have never let us forget it by pointing it out or bad mouthing CGI and us all together whenever they seem to get the chance. We have publicly explained what happened and fell over ouselves apologizing to everyone, but.... You can find those discussions here in the Forums as we do not delete anything here - good or bad. Bottom line, after a long weekend without sleep, Laurence and myself solved the issue and CGI works as it should.

2. Having been a developer now for over 25 years, I can tell you that CGI scripts - whether written in Perl, C, TCL, Python, etc. - can sometimes be difficult. This comes from being a cross platform solution. The developer has built his/her script for the server he/she is used to. But not all servers are created and configured equal. Only the simplest scripts will usually go in and run right away. It can be frustrating for the non-developer or a non-technical person to understand that, and sometimes out of frustration, will post a negative comment. So, being a good hosting company, we respond by going in and fixing whatever was the cause of thier problem. It is usually minor, bad path, corrupted script due to improper uploading, DOS characters thrown in because the user edited it in a Windows editor and did not save as DOS text, etc.

3. It should be noted that if we were like most hosting companies, we would simply refuse to assist our users with thier CGI issues (unless of course it was due to us). We don't like that approach.

4. To assist our users even more, we are making scripts available that are predesigned for our servers, so their is very little our users have to do to install them. They are "ready to run" as is. You will find them here in the forums, unless you are not a member, then you cannot see them. I am adding more to them all the time (3 comming tonight!).

Bottom line - CGI works fine. You should not be concerned about it, really. I would be shocked if none of our users, or even myself, ever had a problem with a CGI script...that just isn't natural. That then assumes that anyone who creates a script, or any application for that matter, is perfect and knows everything. Man, then I am a lousy developer! he he he

We have many users here that have installed their own scripts without any problems. You don't see those in the forum's, and rightfully so. The forum's are a place for discussion on many topics, most of which are issues someone is having. So this is where you will see this sort of thing. However; to put it in perspective, we currently have almost 500 users - now how many are posting with CGI problems?

I hope this helps, and if I can be of further service, please don't hesitate to ask!

this is not myself

I know what the matter is when it comes to my account : it's me. I still can't load that guest book script, most annoying .. but I'm perfectly well aware this is my shortcomings in the technical competence field.

All you needed was to set a couple of paths in the guest.cgi. I did it for you.

Enjoy!
