VPS Port Questions

Hi there;

I'm interested in your Virtual Reseller package, and was
wondering the following:

- Can I run a java based socket server on the VPS, and have
control over which ports the socket server listens on ? I'd
like to make my Flash client connect to it and check
for it on various ports that are typically open, like
the following:

1. 5222 Jabber Client
2. 5190 AIM Instant Messenger
3. 7070 Real Player
4. 6901 MSN Messenger
5. 6666 Internet Relay Chat
6. 5500 VNC Client // Administrator hole
7. 5631 PCAnywhere // Administrator hole

- If I can't do the ports above, can I open a single port ?
If so, is the port of my choosing or do you assign the port
number ?

- Can I install whatever I want on the server ?

- If I choose one plan, and later want to upgrade to another
plan, is there a fee ?

- How much are bandwidth overages ?

- I've used unix before, and am comfortable with basic unix
commands and dos commands, but may need to ask for pointers
from time to time regarding installing/where to look for for
things... I'll definitely be trying my best to find things out
on my own, but if I get stuck on something is it "ok" to ask
for a few quick pointers ?

Thanks for your time !

Regards,

Brad Parks

Hi Brad!

Lot's of questions! Let's do them one at a time, shall we?

1. You cannot run any application that will take control of out server sockets. Also, we would not permit the opening of the sockets as you mentioned. This is our policy and is obviously due to the inappropriate hacking and cracking taking place today across the net. This is in no way a reflection on you. We are responsable for the safety our clients and our clients clients, etc. I hope you understand.

2. You can install pretty much most anything you want that is within our TOS. Things that you cannot install, include but not limited to: adult (obscene) material, CGI based chat software, spammers, web bots (intelligent agents) that write back to the server continuously, some bulk emailers, and others. We reserve the right to deny any use of our servers we deem inappropriate.

3. There is no extra fee to upgrade.

4. Extra bandwidth is $5.00 per 1gb per month.

5. You can always ask us questions!

- Mike

Thanks for the quick response....

I'm pretty new to the idea of Virtual Private Servers, and had the impression that each virtual server was pretty much it's own server in almost ever respect... I'll admit the only one I've heard this about is Ensim, so is that what you're running or is it something else ? I noticed that you're using Plesk, but I thought that it was simply the UI to Ensim ?

Thanks again !

Brad Parks.
