Coldfusion/Windows question

I am looking into getting Coldfusion hosting in a Windows environment with MSSQL databases. I would like to know the following before I make a decision:

- I will need to make use of CFC's so having access to the cfobject tag is a necessity. The CFHTTP tag is also important. So which CF tags are restricted from use?
- Will I have access to the CF scheduler in order to run CF pages on a scheduled basis? (Or is there some other mechanism for running a CF page on a scheduled basis)
- Is it correct that I will be able to run the SQL management studio on my local machine and access my MSSQL databases on the server?
- Can I have java libraries installed if needed? (ie - something like jasypt)

Any answers to these questions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi David,

Yes, CFOBJECT and CFHTTP can be used. We only have a few restrictions (CFEXECUTE and CFREGISTRY) but they can be used in a sandbox too.

We can set up things in the CF Scheduler for you. Just put in a ticket and the techs will set it up for you.

Alot of people use the local install of SQL Management Studio to manage SQL so no problem there.

Java libraries, not sure what use they'd be on a CF server as we don't have Java installed.

Cold Fusion Version

Thanks for the info. I forgot to ask and didn't see it anywhere but what version of Coldfusion are you running. I am assuming 9.

Also, as far as the java libraries go, Coldfusion is built on the J2EE architecture and you have access to all of the standard java libraries in your CF code. I was just wondering if you will install external java libraries (ie - jar files), at the customers request.

For example, jasypt is a popular java encryption library and if the appropriate jar files are loaded on the CF server, you can create objects from the classes contained in this library and use them in your code.

Thanks

It does need the overall Java Standard Edition installed though and I checked and we have it on a few servers (jdk1.6.0_24) so looks like we'll be able to support that too. Just mention you need it in the comments section of the order form if you sign up so you can be placed on the correct server.

Not yet. But I'm going to get a Plesk 10 server soon which supports CF 9 on Windows.

Hi Dave,

First server was scheduled to be done this past Saturday but we ran into a few issues and have postponed it. We are having some internal discussion so all techs are on the same page about the upgrade and will continue on Saturday morning again. Will probably do another one on Sunday morning if all goes well.

Did the upgrade to Coldfusion 9 happen yet?

Thanks,

Dave

We abandoned the upgrades as it was too risky. So instead we decided to bring a new server online with a brand new install of CF9. Easier that way.
