Explain How To Set Up Subdomain sites

I need a clear explaination on how to set up a website as a subdomain.

I have currently loaded my primary site to my standard main httpdocs subdirectly. Works fine!.

Now I want to load a secondary website to allow it to be accedd using a subdomain reference (ie: www.secondsite.primarysite.com) I simply cannot find any specific instructions to work me through this.

Note: I have configured the subdomain within PLESK, attached to the primary domain.
I've checked to see that on my Nexus host account, the new subdomain name I configured in PLESK appears in the subdomains directly in my account.

I loaded my secondsite into the subdomains/secondsite/httpdocs directly, thinking I could then access it using the subdomain convention. But it dont work... can anyone shed some light on this issue.

Cheers

Hey Buz.

You have to go into the control panel and "Add A New Domain"

when you do that you will do secondsite.prmarysite.com

Go through the entire setup for a normal domain.

You can then set your mail preferences.

You will have entire different FTP and CP set to gain access.

Its been a while since I've done a Sub, but they are pretty strait forward to do.

Thanks for your reply.

I now realise that when creating subdomains within PLESK, that PLESK creates the specific directories for use by each subdomain within the primary domain's subdirectly called "subdomains". I then have to locate the httpdocs directly within each subdomain directly in which to load my specific webpages.

I've now done that, and your right, its pretty straight forward when you know where everything is supposed to go.

My next task is to try and configure the subdomains to allow a browser to use www.subdomain.maindomain.com name structure.

You'll have trouble getting to "www.subdomain.domain.com" as most people will look for "subdomain.domain.com".

If you want www to work, you'll need to add an entry to DNS.

Rob has a good point. Normally www is not used with a subdomain. Is there some particular reason why you want it, or would the secondsite.primarysite.com type URL be fine for you?

Hi,

Can someone advise me on what I have to change in DNS to allow my subdomain to have www. I deal with people who are not too internet savvy and they get confused about the www thing, so I figure it will be easier to have www.

Thanks!!

If a CNAME record for www.example.com (example.com being your domain) is not setup, under DNS settings in Plesk, click Add Record. Then setup as follows:

Record type: CNAME
Enter domain name: www (domain prefilled)
Enter canonical name: domain name in the form of example.com

Hope this helps!

For a subdomain, you can do similar with DNS, or you can set the sub-domain as www.subdomain[.domain.com] in the first place....
