Hope it helps. Planning to write additional tutorials as time permits.
Edit: Have part of a blog management tutorial up.

I am confused here
httpdocs/ - 757
OK. I can't find the right combination of Read-Write- Execute to make it 757 here. I've been clicking away at various check boxes in the Owner - Group - Public permissions.
Is this command server-dependent?

Owner: Read, Write, Execute
Group: Read, , Execute
Everyone: Read, Write, Execute
Otherwise written as:
rwxr-xrwxd-
*********
Edit: You may as well make it 777

Most FTP programs I've come across have lots of little check boxes. They might display the octal number, but you'd need to do a lot of clicks if you're guessing.
On the other hand, there are also websites that can help. Just google

Ah - just thought, Susanna. You're not installing this on Windows, are you? If you are, it's a different story...

This is why I use FileZilla. Free, open-source and available for Linux, Mac and Windows. It has the octal and check boxes. Right click the file or file and select file permissions... Even has an option for recursive file permission and several options there for that.
