CGI abuse on Alpha
Yet again Alpha's load shot up today rendering it completely useless. Logging into the server at root found another CGI script running away with all the ram and cpu power. Needless to say that is unacceptable.
The same thing happened about 2 months ago, same client too. Don't use our commercial servers to test and develop your cgi scripts. I'm inclined to terminate this client's account for this second incident but a last warning is being given instead.
These are shared servers, you share them with many people.

Apparently this was a genuine mistake. He uploaded a previous cgi file by accident which contained some nightmare loops.

why couldn't he just download the Perl component, and install IIS, with Active Perl, and test his scripts in his computer locally before going live?
this person needs to be hung upside down for months next time he pulls a stunt like this again...

I am the one that has caused all this trouble. And for that, I apologize.
After the first incident, which I had no idea was even possible, I installed apache and Perl on my system and began testing my scripts before I ran them on my site.
The script that I ran did the same thing on my system that it did here. I fixed it and continued working. However, I had two versions of it on my hard drive, and when I went to upload it, I selected the wrong one.
We all know what happened next.
Once again, I apologize, and as I have assured Laurence and Mike, it wont happen again.
Sincerely,
Jared Deschner

hello culprit,
at least you stepped up and explained yourself. its an honest mistake, anyone here in HN could have done the same. Just in future releases of your CGI scripts, please be more careful. But other than that, no harm done, to me anyway.... so, carry one everyone... rock on!
