As many of you are aware, since we upgraded to Plesk 7.02, we have been rather plagued by email issues. Plesk 7.02 brought with it a new algo for SpamAssassin that is incredibly resource intensive. This coupled with a spike in virus activity which is causing our anti-virus software to work double time, has caused load to rise quite significantly on alot of servers. We have had to deactivate anti-virus on a few servers while we came up with a new solution and we also streamlined the qmail service which has caused some email delivery delays.
Our solution is to process all email from all servers with SpamAssassin and Anti-Virus on a separate, powerful gateway server. In doing so, we relieve all servers of load issues attributed to these 2 programs. The servers will be faster and qmail will be delivering fast again with reliable anti-virus and email tagged with SpamAssassin (SA).
As each server will no longer be running SA, it will be deactivated. We will transfer all SA settings from the Plesk database for all mailboxes to the new server. You will no longer be able to use the Spam Filter in Plesk and we will be reverting to our old system of SA in SquirrelMail which will interface with the new server. So to control SA, you cam login at webmail.yourdomain.com. Also, we are going to go a step further than before and set up an anonymous, unbranded site (mail-shield.com) where you can log into and set SpamAssassin scores, whitelists, blacklists etc.
We have just about finished testing and the new system will be live in 24 hours. I will email an announcement when the time comes and we can also discuss this at NexusPortal too. SA will be available in SquirrelMail when the service goes live and the unbranded site will follow in a few days. Mail to the new server will be controlled by a primary MX record in your DNS record and it can be removed if you don't wish mail to be sent to the mail gateway server (Mail Shield, as it will be called).
We are very much looking forward to implementing this new system as it's going to improve many factors of our service immediately. We also have other plans for improving server performance during backups via an off-server solution. Plus we are getting ready to offer Windows and ColdFusion so lots of things happening at the Nexus!
