Not quite - the USA is one of the few places in the world that your phone won't work, as they don't use the GSM system - like every other international standard they decided to 'go it alone' and adopted a system technically similar to our CDMA. Some built-up areas of the USA and airports have small GSM zones for travellers, but don't count on them.

If you're headed to Europe though, enjoy!

As for the telcos here, don't even get me started - do you know why the analogue network was shut down and GSM adopted? It wasn't, as the Government tried to make people believe, because it was a superior technology. Given the vast distances the network needed to cover with minimal phone density, the technology was more expensive to implement and offered less call quality. It was purely to allow the new telco entrants - Optus and Vodafone - the ability to compete with Telstra, by forcing them all to start 'fresh' with a new mobile network.

To a degree the lesser availability of decent bandwidth can be blamed on geographical problems - with roughly the same land area to cover as the USA (minus Alaska), but a population density of 2 people per square kilometre, economically it is difficult to justify mass rollout of any technology. If Telstra is forced to compete with other telcos (regardless of whether they are privatised or not) they cannot and will not roll out any infrastructure without it being likely to return a profit in a reasonable time. Of course, if there wasn't competition, Telstra would remain incredibly inefficient and we'd still be paying even more exorbitant prices for their services. If you think their prices are bad now, compare them to what they used to be in the early 90's.

Don't get me wrong - I hate Telstra with a passion moreso than most people, but there are some issues they do have a defence against.

OK Darkman, "go me" , that's fine

after all you can't really say "go waratahs" can you

in fact, to be real here, the only team that gets the guernsey 'go' is , gosh, collingwood

some of us have to show integrity (!)

good old collingwood forever, we know how to play the game, side by side we stick together e.t.c e.t.c e.t.c.

there was a time Darkman, maybe before your day ?, heavens of course it was before your day (I'm an old fart) golly it was almost before my day, when for anyone of either gender or any age who would unthinkingly mutter under their breath 'go pies' in some neutral area would be pretty well bashed unconscious

if not physically (which has happened) at least metaphorically

it was such a Bad Thing to barrack for collingwood that I go out of my way to attend bloody boring games and watch bloody boring TV replays and read bloody boring newspaper reports of whatever game it was that collingood played

(I don't really care who wins as long as carlton loses)

I live in collingwood, I shop in collingwood, I work in collingwod, I support my neighbourhood, and my local footy team . I've been here since 1856 (gee I look well for my age) and there are still others living here who dutifully carry on the tradition

We're all stuck here like an afterthought on the central business district -- and are they cross or what ? they can't get rid of us , my own tiny place has a heritage listing now, hah !

Our new neighbours (arrived after WW2, over whelmingly greek-speaking) started in the early 1950s to quickly adopt the collingwood footy team

Nowadays every Con, Nick and Ari barracks for collingwod

as I said , some of us have to show integrity

it's still a class thing I reckon

and I still reckon laurence should picka team before he moves with his family to melbourne

something neutral

like backpackers do

perhaps hawthorn ?
