Okay, looks like each university in Australia routes it's traffic through an RNO (Regional Network Organisation) - in the case of NSW, the
NSWRNO (must have taken them a long time to make up that name!), and in QLD it's
QuestNet (QUeensland Education, Science and Technology Network), etc.
Each of these RNO's is then connected to each other via
AARNet (Australian Academic and Research Network), providing fast connections between the various Universities and research organisations (ie CSIRO) without utilising external bandwidth - and presumably they then buy their external bandwidth together to save on costs.
So, my guess is that something is blocking these messages from getting through. Possibly it's because the messages are marked as "list" messages, or alternatively they may be using one of the blacklists that HN has made its way on to thanks to some users a while back using mailing scripts lacking in security, and AARNet isn't sending blocking messages back.
Or maybe something else really wierd is happening... but my guess is that AARNet is the culprit.
So, unless there is somebody on Laurence's list who is actually receiving mail from behind AARNet without problems, my suggestion is that we don't use .edu.au or .csiro.au addresses for HN updates...
