This is indicative of some kind of data interruption between you and the server, but usually on the local machine. Maybe a local firewall issue or something like that.

The problem was a Firefox add-on called AutoComplete Pro. Disabling it solved the problem. Even though it was only an add-on to Firefox, it affected all browsers.
